Appliances are heavy, awkward, and frequently down a flight of stairs or wedged into a laundry closet. They are also the category people most often put off, which is how a garage ends up with two dead fridges in it.
You do not need to get it to the curb. Once it is disconnected, I will carry it out from wherever it sits — basement, upstairs laundry room, second-floor apartment with an elevator.
The metal in appliances is worth recycling, so washers, dryers, water heaters and ranges get separated out rather than dumped whole. Anything still in working order is worth flagging when you call — it may be a candidate for donation instead. Very little of an appliance actually needs to reach a landfill.
