Junk removal in Rocklin

Rocklin's rubbish is collected by Recology under an exclusive agreement with the city, and the large-item arrangement here is a drop-off system rather than a kerbside one — you take it to them. That works fine for a single item and a pickup truck. This page is about the free routes first, then the jobs where hauling it yourself stops making sense.

Three places will take it off you, two of them free for some items

Recology points Rocklin households at their own transfer stations in Auburn, Meadow Vista and Foresthill, or at the big facility in Lincoln, and between them they take appliances, electronics, mattresses, furniture, scrap metal, textiles and carpet with its padding. If what you have is one dead washing machine and a trailer, that is the cheap answer and you should take it. Two things go in for nothing at the Lincoln site: electronics and hazardous waste up to fifteen gallons or a hundred and twenty-five pounds a day, and up to four mattresses or box springs a day for California residents. Call Recology on (530) 885-3735 if you want to check what your own service covers before you load anything.

Where a drop-off system stops working

The catch with drop-off is that every part of the job stays yours. You lift it, you tie it down, you drive it, you pay at the gate, and if it does not all fit you do it twice. Lincoln is a round trip from most of Rocklin and Auburn is further; two loads is most of a Saturday. It also assumes you can get the thing out of the house in the first place, which is where most of my Rocklin calls actually come from — a treadmill in an upstairs spare room, a sofa that came in before the banister went up, a shed that has to go before a fence can be replaced. Nothing about the drop-off arrangement helps with the part before the kerb.

What I'll load

Furniture and mattresses, appliances including fridges and water heaters, televisions and computers, garage and household clutter, yard waste and brush, construction and remodel debris, exercise equipment, and scrap metal. The part the drop-off system cannot help with is getting it out, and that is most of what I am here for — lofts, back bedrooms, sheds behind a fence line. What I cannot take is hazardous: paint, solvents, fuel, pool chemicals, asbestos. Nobody can legally, but the Lincoln site takes all of it free, which is covered below.

What it costs

By the cubic yard — the space it fills in the trailer — with a $165 minimum on any trip. If you have been pricing this against trips to Lincoln, the comparison is the gate fee plus your fuel and your afternoon, against one number that includes the lifting. You hear that number before I touch anything and it does not change afterwards. Text a photo with your address to get it.

The cheap bin is closed to new customers

A quirk of the Rocklin rate sheet that nobody mentions when you move in. The 32-gallon can service is footnoted "existing customers only — service is not available to new customers." If you have lived here for years on that tier you are paying about $18 a month. If you bought the house last spring, your floor is the Toter at roughly $34, nearly twice as much for the same collection. Rocklin does also offer something its neighbours do not: an unlimited Toters tier at about $45, where you can set out as many carts as you like. For a household steadily working through a loft or a garage over several months, that is worth pricing against hiring anyone.

The Auburn station takes no cash

Small thing, ruins an afternoon. Recology's transfer station at 12305 Shale Ridge Lane in Auburn is open every day from 8am to 4:45pm and takes credit cards and cheques only — no cash at the scale. The bigger facility is the one in Lincoln at 3195 Athens Avenue, (916) 543-3960, with the disposal gate open 7am to 5pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm at weekends. Note that the administration building for that operation has a Roseville address on Fiddyment Road, which is why some listings place the tip in Roseville. The gate you drive through is the Athens Avenue one in Lincoln.

Lincoln prices by the yard, and painted wood is not wood

As published for July 2025. Household waste $25.25 a cubic yard or $109.25 a ton, $25.25 minimum — and this is the bit that surprises people, furniture, mattresses and painted wood are all billed at that rate rather than as timber. Clean untreated lumber is $17.50 a yard, green waste $20. A fridge, freezer or air conditioner $46.50; a washer, dryer, dishwasher or water heater $11; a car tyre $5.25. Free for California residents: electronics and hazardous waste up to fifteen gallons or a hundred and twenty-five pounds a day, and four mattresses a day. These are the latest published figures rather than a quote — ring the number above if the amount decides it for you.

Treated wood and tyres are where the bill jumps

Two traps worth knowing before you take a demolition load up there. Treated wood — old decking, fence posts, anything pressure-treated — is $228.50 a ton rather than the $17.50 a yard that clean lumber costs, so a dismantled deck is not a cheap trailer load. Railroad ties and utility poles are refused outright. Tyres have to be cut into at least quarters to go in at the landfill, though whole ones are taken at the recovery facility. The facility's published list also refuses asbestos from anyone self-hauling, along with dead animals and barbecue or burn-barrel ash. That list is an old document, so if your load includes anything on it, phone first rather than finding out at the scale.

Working to your deadline

Rocklin is a scheduled run for me rather than a local call, so the more notice the better — a few days usually lets me pin a specific morning. The jobs that need pinning here are mostly trade-driven: a builder waiting on a skip that has not turned up, a remodel where the debris has to be gone before the next crew arrives. Say the date when you ring and you will get a straight yes or no on the call, not a maybe followed by silence.

When calling me is the wrong choice

One item, already outside, and something to carry it in — take it to Lincoln yourself. It is cheaper and I will tell you so if you call. Electronics, paint and chemicals go in there free, so never pay anyone for those. And if you are on the unlimited Toters tier with months rather than days, the carts will absorb an astonishing amount at no extra cost. Come to me when the problem is not disposal but handling: heavy things above ground level, a volume that needs a trailer and a second trip, a stump or a slab the kerbside service is not obliged to touch, a fixed date. $165 minimum, priced by volume.

Where this came from, and when

Compiled 11 October 2026 from the City of Rocklin's own refuse handouts and its published Recology rate sheet, from Recology Auburn Placer's service pages, and from the Western Placer Waste Management Authority's facility pages and July 2025 price sheet. Rocklin's current-year rate schedule was not reachable, so the monthly figures here are from the most recent sheet the city publishes and should be treated as approximate. Gate rates and accepted materials change — call before you drive. If something here is wrong or out of date, tell me and I will correct it.
