Free electronics and chemical pickup, every Wednesday
Lincoln will collect universal waste from your kerb every Wednesday, by appointment, for nothing. The city's own test for what qualifies is anything with both a circuit board and a plug — so televisions, monitors, computers, printers, games consoles, microwaves — plus automotive fluids and used cooking oil. Hazardous waste is also collected free on request. One number does all of it: (916) 434-2450. If what you are clearing out is a stack of dead electronics and some old paint, book that and keep your money; it is a better service than most cities in this area offer and it costs you a phone call.
What the city will not collect is anything large
Lincoln publishes a thorough waste guide and a recycling page, and neither describes a bulky or large-item pickup — because there is not one. No free annual collection, no appointment slot for a sofa, no yearly allowance. What the city offers instead is a temporary three-yard bin for residents with an active utility account, which is useful for a slow clear-out and no use for a wardrobe. So in Lincoln the choice is genuinely between hauling it yourself to a tip that happens to be in your own town, or having someone carry it out and take it.
What I'll load
Furniture and mattresses, appliances including fridges and water heaters, televisions and computers, garage and household clutter, yard waste and brush, construction and remodel debris, exercise equipment, and scrap metal. In Lincoln the distance to the tip is not the problem, so what people actually hire me for is the stairs, the doorframes and the weight. What I cannot take is hazardous: paint, solvents, fuel, pool chemicals, asbestos. Nobody can legally — and you have the Wednesday collection for precisely that, which beats anything I could offer.
What it costs
By the cubic yard — how much of the trailer it fills — with a $165 minimum on any trip. Living this close to the gate, the honest comparison is narrow: a minimum load at the tip is $25.25 plus your time and your vehicle, against one price that includes someone else doing the carrying. You get that price up front and it holds. Text a photo with your address for it.
Five rules that get a bin left behind
Lincoln is stricter about presentation than its neighbours, and a missed cart costs $42 to have collected again. Your container will not be serviced if it goes out after 6:00 in the morning, if the lid will not close, if it is packed so tight the contents will not fall freely, if loose rubbish has not been bagged, or if it is closer than five feet to another container or six feet to a parked car. Worth knowing during a clear-out, because the temptation to cram one more thing in is exactly what leaves the cart on the kerb and you $42 down.
Green waste: two feet long, two inches thick, and no bags
This is the tightest green waste rule anywhere in my service area and it matters if you are taking out a tree. Branches have to be under two feet long and under two inches in diameter, and the city will not take green waste in bags — it goes in the cart loose. The facility down the road will take branches up to two feet for $20 a cubic yard, so a serious pruning job is either a lot of trips with a cart that keeps filling, or one load that goes at once. Lincoln does also collect bagged leaves in December, which is the one exception to the no-bags rule.
The tip is in your town, so self-hauling is cheapest here
I am going to argue against myself for a paragraph, because in Lincoln it is true. The facility is at 3195 Athens Avenue inside your own city limits, (916) 543-3960, disposal gate 7am to 5pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm at weekends. Published July 2025 rates: household waste $25.25 a cubic yard or $109.25 a ton with a $25.25 minimum, green waste $20 a yard, clean untreated lumber $17.50 a yard, treated wood $228.50 a ton. A fridge, freezer or air conditioner $46.50; a washer, dryer, dishwasher or water heater $11; a car tyre $5.25. Free for California residents: electronics and hazardous waste up to fifteen gallons or a hundred and twenty-five pounds a day, and four mattresses a day. If you own a trailer and the thing is already outside, use that gate instead of paying me.
Collected on every holiday, which is unusual
One more thing in Lincoln's favour. The city states that rubbish and green waste are collected on all holidays — no skipped weeks, no shifted days, no calendar to check. Every franchised town around here publishes a holiday schedule where your Thursday becomes a Friday. It sounds minor until you are clearing a house between Christmas and New Year, when the cart keeps being emptied and the tip is one of the three days a year it is shut. Worth planning a holiday clear-out around.
Working to your deadline
Lincoln is the western limit of where I work, so it is a trip I plan rather than one I squeeze in — a day or two of notice normally does it. The fixed dates I get called about here tend to come with paperwork attached: a completion, a tenancy change, a probate clearance with a solicitor waiting. Tell me the date up front. You will get an answer on that call either way.
When calling me is the wrong choice
More often in Lincoln than anywhere else, honestly. Electronics, chemicals, oil and cooking fat: book the Wednesday collection, it is free. Up to four mattresses: the Athens Avenue gate takes them for nothing. One or two items and a trailer: you are minutes from a $25.25 minimum load and would be paying me for a shorter drive than my own. The case for calling me is about handling rather than distance — a staircase, a doorway something will not come back through, a volume that needs more than one run, or a property that has to be empty on somebody else's date. $165 minimum, priced by volume.
Where this came from, and when
Compiled 11 October 2026 from the City of Lincoln's solid waste guide and recycling pages, and from the Western Placer Waste Management Authority's facility pages and its July 2025 price sheet. The gate rates are the latest the operator publishes rather than confirmed current, and collection rules change, so call ahead before you load anything. If something here has gone out of date, tell me and I will correct it.
