You get a free two-yard coupon every year. Use it.
The county's agreement with Recology entitles you to an annual coupon good for up to two cubic yards of unsorted waste at no charge. Two yards is about six of those big 32-gallon bags, or a small trailer load — enough for a modest garage tidy if you can get it there yourself. Rocklin households do not have this and neither do Roseville's. If you have not used this year's and the job is small, that is the answer and it costs you nothing but the drive. Recology on (530) 885-3735 will tell you where you stand.
And an annual hazardous waste event, written into the contract
This one is genuinely unusual. Granite Bay is one of only two places in Recology's entire Placer County franchise area — the other is Sheridan, right up the north end — where the hauler is obliged, at its own expense, to run a one-day universal waste and hazardous waste collection event each year. It is not a courtesy; it is a clause in the county agreement naming rural Granite Bay specifically, and Rocklin has nothing equivalent. Paint, chemicals, batteries, electronics: wait for that day and it costs nothing. Ask Recology when this year's falls. If you cannot wait, the facility in Lincoln takes the same material free, daily, which is covered below.
What I'll load
Furniture and mattresses, appliances including fridges and water heaters, televisions and computers, garage and household clutter, brush and yard waste, construction and remodel debris, exercise equipment, and scrap metal. Granite Bay being what it is, a lot of my work here is further from the house than usual — down a long drive, behind a barn, round the back of a pool house — and none of that needs dragging to the road first. What I cannot take is hazardous: paint, solvents, fuel, pool chemicals, asbestos. Nobody can legally, and you have two free routes for it above and below.
What it costs
By the cubic yard — the space it takes up in the trailer — with a $165 minimum on any trip. Volume rather than per item, which on a big property matters: once I am out there, clearing the second shed as well costs far less than a second visit would. The total is firm before anything is lifted. A photo of the pile and your address by text is the fastest way to a number.
You may not have a green waste cart at all
Here is the gap, and it hits exactly the properties with the most brush to deal with. Kerbside yard waste collection is not universal in unincorporated Placer — Recology states plainly that some service areas do not have it, and the county agreement defines the zones by how densely the subdivision is built: one zone needs ten lots of two acres or less, another needs fifty lots. The practical effect is that the bigger and more rural your parcel, the less likely you are to have a green waste cart, while having more oak litter, more brush and more fire clearance to do than anyone on a quarter-acre. If that is you, every bit of it is a self-haul or a phone call, every time.
What your hauler is allowed to say no to
The county agreement spells this out, and the list is longer than most people assume. Recology may refuse tree stumps over ten inches across and may refuse concrete outright. It can require dimensional lumber to be cut to eight feet or shorter. It does not have to take anything too large or heavy for its ordinary equipment, and it is not obliged to remove construction, alteration, repair or demolition debris at all unless you have separately arranged a debris box. Containers over 45 gallons are not permitted, and a 33 to 45 gallon can carries a small oversize charge. So an old patio, a felled oak or a bathroom strip-out is not a kerbside job here — that is not the hauler being awkward, it is what the contract says.
Two tips to choose between, and one takes no cash
Recology's transfer station at 12305 Shale Ridge Lane in Auburn is open daily 8am to 4:45pm and takes cards and cheques but no cash at the scale, with a yard priced around $21.74. The bigger facility is 3195 Athens Avenue in Lincoln, (916) 543-3960, disposal gate 7am to 5pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm at weekends. Published July 2025 rates there: household waste $25.25 a cubic yard or $109.25 a ton with a $25.25 minimum; green waste $20 a yard, but only if branches are under two feet; clean untreated lumber $17.50 a yard; treated wood $228.50 a ton, which is what an old fence line actually costs. A fridge, freezer or air conditioner $46.50; a washer, dryer, dishwasher or water heater $11; a car tyre $5.25. Free: electronics and hazardous waste up to fifteen gallons or a hundred and twenty-five pounds a day, and four mattresses a day.
You pay more than Rocklin for the same company
Not a complaint, just useful when you are deciding whether to add a cart or make a phone call. On the county's rates effective July 2025, a 32-gallon can in Granite Bay is $22.72 a month and a 96-gallon toter is $40.38, with each additional toter $27.65. Six cans comes to $75.33. The same hauler charges Rocklin households noticeably less for the equivalent service — their most recent published sheet puts a can nearer $18 and a toter nearer $34, though that sheet is a year old so treat the gap as indicative rather than exact. The reason is simply that Rocklin negotiates its own city franchise and you are on the county's. Adding cans does scale, so for a clear-out spread over months the bins are worth pricing. For anything that has to go at once, they are not the tool.
Working to your deadline
Granite Bay is a trip I plan into the week rather than a local hop, and a couple of days' notice usually covers it. Two deadlines come up here more than anywhere else I work: a buyer's inspection that has turned up a barn full of somebody's history, and fire clearance before an inspection or an insurance renewal. Both have a hard date. Say what yours is and you will know on the call whether I can hold it.
When calling me is the wrong choice
If you have not used this year's two-yard coupon and the job fits in it, use the coupon. If it is paint, chemicals or electronics, wait for your annual collection event or run it to Lincoln, where it goes in free either way. If it is a handful of mattresses, four a day go in free as well. Where I earn the money is scale and reach: acreage, brush that has built up over seasons, a stump or a slab the hauler is contractually allowed to refuse, a long carry from somewhere a trailer cannot get to, or a date somebody else set. My minimum is $165 and the price is by volume — weigh that against the trips, the gate fees, and how many weekends you want to spend on it.
Where this came from, and when
Compiled 11 October 2026 from Placer County's franchise agreement with Recology and the county's June 2025 rate memo, from Recology Auburn Placer's own service pages, and from the Western Placer Waste Management Authority's facility pages and July 2025 price sheet. Granite Bay has no city hall, so terms come from the county contract — worth reading if you want the detail, because it is more specific than most people expect. Rates and accepted materials change, so call before you drive. If anything here is out of date, tell me and I will fix it.
