El Dorado Hills has its own recycling centre on Latrobe Road, and residents here get a green waste allowance most of the county doesn't. It also has a refusal list that surprises people at the gate. Here's what goes where — including everything you can handle without me.
The El Dorado Hills Recycling Center at 4421 Latrobe Road is open Tuesday to Saturday, 9am to 3:30pm, with a short lunch closure around midday. It takes bottle and can buyback, cardboard, newspaper and magazines, household batteries, and electronic waste free for county residents. Now the part that catches people: it will not take televisions over 60 inches, microwaves, appliances of any kind, paint, hazardous waste, or general trash. So the big living-room TV you were planning to drop off on a Saturday morning is a wasted trip, and so is the old fridge in the garage. Those need the Diamond Springs facility or a different route entirely.
This is the genuinely good deal, and it's worth using before you pay anybody. The green waste bin at Latrobe Road takes up to two cubic yards a day at no charge — but it's for El Dorado Hills Community Services District residents only, and the material has to be loose or in paper compostable bags. Not plastic sacks. Two yards a day, repeatable, is a lot of brush if you're willing to make the trips. Where it stops working is defensible space season: an afternoon of real clearing around a half-acre lot runs to several times that, and nobody wants to make six separate runs to Latrobe Road in August.
Anything Latrobe Road refuses — appliances, big televisions, furniture, construction debris, general trash — goes to the El Dorado Disposal Materials Recovery Facility at 4100 Throwita Way in Diamond Springs. That's roughly 17 miles and about 26 minutes each way from El Dorado Hills, so call it an hour of driving before you've loaded anything. Minimum load charge is $24.53, mixed loose waste $27.06 a yard. It's the single biggest reason El Dorado Hills calls me more than Placerville does: the town is at the far end of the county from its own tip.
County ordinance adds a 25% surcharge to any unsecured load arriving at the facility. Properly secured, not a tarp thrown loosely over the top. After a 26-minute drive, finding out at the gate that your load has just cost a quarter more is a bad morning. It's the most common way a self-haul trip ends up over budget. Everything that leaves in my trailer goes out tarped and strapped, and that's part of what you're paying for.
Furniture and mattresses, appliances including fridges and water heaters, televisions of any size, garage and household clutter, brush and yard waste, construction and remodel debris, exercise equipment, and scrap metal. Nothing needs to be at the curb first — upstairs bedrooms, three-car garages, back decks and basements are all normal, and plenty of El Dorado Hills houses have stairs between the thing and the driveway. What I can't take is hazardous: paint, solvents, fuel, pool chemicals, asbestos. No junk removal service in California legally can.
By the cubic yard — the space it takes up in the trailer — with a $165 minimum on any trip. Not per item, so once I'm in the driveway the marginal cost of adding the treadmill and two bags of clothes is small. That's worth knowing in a town where the round trip to the tip is an hour: clearing everything in one visit beats three separate Saturdays. Firm total before anything is loaded, and it doesn't move once I've started. Text a photo of the pile with your address for the fastest quote.
Use this before you pay anyone to haul brush. The El Dorado County Fire Safe Council runs a free chipping program across the western slope, funded by CAL FIRE and county air quality grants — two free services a year per address, renewing 1 January, up to six hours of chipping per visit. Material must be seven inches diameter or under, brush only, no rocks, wire or lumber, stacked next to a driveway or road, primary residences only, and nothing on Red Flag days. El Dorado Hills has its own Fire Safe Council as an associate. Apply through edcfiresafe.org. What chipping won't touch is stumps, old fencing, treated lumber and anything with nails in it — that's where I come in.
Latrobe Road won't take any of it, so don't try. El Dorado County residents can drop household hazardous waste free at the Diamond Springs facility on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, 9am to 4pm, closed between noon and one. Different gate and different hours from the regular tip. Charges apply to business waste. If you're clearing a garage in El Dorado Hills, that's one weekend run for the chemicals and one call to me for everything else — between the two, nothing ends up somewhere it shouldn't.
El Dorado Disposal collects here under a franchise agreement with the El Dorado Hills Community Services District that runs to 30 June 2030. Since July 2022 food waste goes in the green-lid yard waste cart under California's organics law, collected fortnightly. Senior discounts are available on all service levels. The CSD office on (916) 933-6624 handles rate questions and service changes. Franchise customers also get free bulky item pickups each year — worth using on a single couch or mattress before you call anyone, though the weight and size limits rule out most appliances.
Honestly: if it's green waste inside two yards and you're in the district, drive it to Latrobe Road. If it's one bulky item and you have a free pickup left, book that. If it's chemicals, save them for a weekend run to Diamond Springs. Where the sums change is the drive. Everything Latrobe Road refuses is an hour round trip, so appliances, large televisions, furniture, remodel debris and anything upstairs or heavy stop being worth your Saturday fast. Add a whole garage, a property that has to be clear by a date, or brush beyond what chipping will take, and one $165 minimum against three trips and a possible 25% surcharge stops being a close call.
