Auburn has a transfer station in town and Placer County has the most generous household hazardous waste arrangement of the four counties I cover — free, every day, no appointment. Use both before you pay anyone. Here's what's left after that.
The Auburn Transfer Station sits at 12305 Shale Ridge Lane, on (530) 885-3735. That's a real advantage — most towns this size in the foothills have nothing closer than a half-hour drive. Ring ahead for current gate hours rather than trusting a listing, including this one; station hours shift seasonally and I'd rather you called than drove. Collection in Auburn is handled by Recology Auburn Placer, which lists Auburn, Rocklin, Colfax, the Town of Loomis and unincorporated Placer County as its service area, on the same number.
This is the single best free service in my whole coverage area and Placer residents routinely don't know it exists. The county's household hazardous waste drop-off at the Materials Recovery Facility is free and open daily, 8am to 5pm. No appointment, no Saturday-only window, no three-days-a-week counter. Paint, solvents, garden chemicals, oil — the things that sit in sheds for a decade because the disposal route is inconvenient. In Placer it simply isn't inconvenient. The facility is at 3195 Athens Avenue in Lincoln, on (916) 543-3960, open Monday to Friday 7am to 5pm and weekends 8am to 5pm, and it runs a free recycling buy-back centre alongside.
Worth knowing if you also own property up the hill, because the same county behaves completely differently on the Tahoe side. The Eastern Regional facility takes household hazardous waste on the third Saturday of the month only, 9am to 11am, by appointment on (530) 583-7800. Two hours a month against Placer's valley-side arrangement of every day of the year. If you're clearing a cabin as well as a house, plan the mountain end around that window and bring the valley material down to Lincoln instead.
Placer runs an unusual arrangement compared with its neighbours: mixed waste goes into one bin and the sorting happens at the Materials Recovery Facility afterwards, rather than being your job at the kerb. It removes a lot of the guesswork, and it's why Placer residents are often surprised by how fussy El Dorado or Sacramento County sound. It doesn't change what's banned from the waste stream altogether — electronics, batteries, chemicals and tyres still need their own route regardless of which bin looks convenient.
Furniture and mattresses, appliances including fridges and water heaters, televisions and computers, garage and household clutter, brush and yard waste, stumps and old fencing, construction and remodel debris, exercise equipment, and scrap metal. Auburn's older properties and sloped lots produce the awkward version of all of this — things that can't simply be wheeled to a kerb. None of it needs to be moved outside first. What I can't take is hazardous: paint, solvents, fuel, pool chemicals, asbestos. No junk removal service in California legally can, and with free daily drop-off in this county you don't need anyone to.
By the cubic yard — the space it takes up in the trailer — with a $165 minimum on any trip. Not per item, so once I'm on site adding the second pile costs little. With a transfer station in town, a single boot-load is genuinely worth doing yourself in Auburn. What isn't is a load needing several runs, or anything that takes two people to move before it even reaches a vehicle. Firm total before anything is loaded, and it doesn't move once I've started.
Auburn sits in the same fire-prone foothill band as the El Dorado County towns, and clearing around a property generates far more material than people expect — it arrives all at once, and it's bulky rather than heavy, which is the worst combination for a car. Check what your own fire district or local Fire Safe Council offers by way of chipping before paying for haulage; several foothill districts run seasonal programs. What chipping never takes is stumps, old wire fencing, treated lumber and anything with nails in it, and that's usually what's left in the pile when the chipper has gone.
California bans electronic waste from household trash — televisions, monitors, computers, printers, anything with a circuit board. Statewide law, and the one-bin system doesn't change it: e-waste still needs its own route. Anything with a built-in battery goes the same way. If it's leaving alongside a larger load, I'll take it and route it to a recycler rather than a landfill.
California's statewide mattress recycling program is funded by a fee you already paid when you bought it, and drop-off is free at participating sites — byebyemattress.com has the nearest. Retailers also have to take the old one when they deliver a new one, so ask first. The part worth paying for is the carry: a mattress bends in the middle, one person can't control it on a staircase, and in Auburn it's often a staircase plus a sloped path to the road.
Auburn is a town where I'll happily talk you out of the job. You have a transfer station locally, free daily hazardous waste drop-off in the county, and a sorting system that does half the thinking for you. A single load you can lift is your own afternoon's work. Where it changes: anything heavy on a sloped or stepped property, a load needing more than one run, stumps and fencing left over after chipping, remodel debris, a full garage or estate clearance, a rental turnover, or anything with a fixed date on it.
